looking for videos or film footage of Carmen Amaya and Lola Flores

I am a big fan of Lola Flores and Carmen Amaya. I am looking for videos or film footage of Lola and Carmen.

It has been very difficult trying to find any movies by these great performers in the United States.

I'm hoping someone can refer me to someplace or someone that might have access to these film footages.

Hello Edwin,

there at least 6-7 movies with Lola Flores, but unfortunately none with Carmen Amaya available in Spain now (in European video format PAL). The only movie with Carmen Amaya available ("Los Tarantos") was deleted some time ago, probably because it will be re-released in DVD.

But...there is a video available with some footage of Carmen Amaya performing in La Habana. Have you got this one?

Miguel

Dear Edwin,

here are the first two "Lola Flores" titles I have been able to find:

Lola Torbellino (1955)
Casa Flora (1972)

there are more, but Spanish companies are continuosly deleting and releasing titles (probably due to rights problems). I will confirm you the availability of the others I have in my list. Unfortunately none of them is included in the wish list you sent me.

Best,

Miguel

I just got three movies with Carmen Amaya, Los Tarantos, Maria de la O and Gipsy Dance and El Embrujo del Fandango. I recomend all of them. I've seen her dance for the first time and i still don't believe my eyes.
You can find these videos either in NTC or VHS/PAL at:

In Maria Amaya's video titled Gypsy Fire, there is footage of 4 of Carmen Amaya's incredible performances.

Carmen Amaya and All "New Flamenco" players are trying to steal Peruvian Folklore.

The CAJON IS PERUVIAN and So is the Duo Guitarra and Cajon!

In one of her albums she uses a genera called "TONDERO" which is Peruvian Folklore and Born in "Lambayeque and Piura". A Mix of "African"!,"Indian" and "Creole" Music!!!

She also turns the lyrics...which are not the real lyrics..

SPAIN STEALS ALOT FROM SOUTH AMERICAN COUNTRIES..SPECIAL PERU..SINCE WE HAVE THE BEST MUSIC!

Dear Javier,
First remark: Carmen Amaya died 40 years ago.
Second remark: when she adapted "Tondero" to a Bulerias rythm, it was because she heard that song and she loved it so much! But please, don't speak about "stealing music"
Ciao!

Dear Edwin, I am appaled to hear such trash as "Carmen Amaya stealing peruvian folklore". A very accurate reply later in this page very aptly put things back in perspertive: Carmen only liked the song (which is a dance, anyway) and "adapted it to her private genius, as did many other performers, Lola Flores, Antonio, Ximenez and Vargas, Jose Greco (him foremost) Conchita Piquer, and many others. If that peruvian chap is not honored to have one of his native song to be borrowed, for the better of it, it is a bloody shame.
I can tell you about other films in which Carmen appears:
1/ Follow thw boys, also called Cheers for the boys and in spanish "Suenos de gloria" (Edward Sutherland, 1944). Carmen dances a fiery Alegria solo, but with her company, and is not even mentioned on the video jacket !!!!.
2/ Panama Hattie (El sombrero de Panama) by Norman McLeod, 1942. She has two numbers, I believe, one silo and one with the company.
3/ Knickerbocker holiday, by Harry Joe Brown, 1950) (in spanish "Pierna de plata") where she dances with the company.
There are also a few films which she made in Mexico:
- Maravilloa del toreo (Rafael Sevilla, 1942)
- Seda, sangre y sol (Fernando Rivero, 1942)
- Musica en la noche (Tito Davidson, 1955 ?)
- La Lampara de Aladino, shot in Buenos Aires
by Luis Moya Barth
I also can refer you to the book "Carmen Amaya o la danza del fuego", by Mario Bois (spanish and german edition) and where I have a prominent part in describing Carmen's dance and style. I knew her quite well with she performed in Paris (I am french, but now live in Andalucia) after 41 years in Montreal, Canada.
And of course, I have quite a few records with her, vynile and CD, including some quite rare.
So, dear Edwin, I hope this will help you !
I am now working on a book called "Flamenco yesterday, today and tomorrow" which is to be published in the fall.
So cheerio for now, and good luck !
Patrick.

paco de lucia said"music that we hear influence us...there is no doubt about it...and the genius is the first to catch the good idea in the music that we hear" he was talking about him self!! and his falsetas that was inspired from nino ricardo falsetas! ...yeah i think that's it...catch the good idea a make a new thing that you think sounds great! why not taking some great ideas from people around the world and try to express my way of looking at what they do! it is simply music devlopement! like evrithing we do ...study ,research ,cooking..ect just catch or steal the good idea like paco says!

Dear Mr Schupp,

I have seen your message. Thank you to support me. I have read with a lot of interest Mario Bois' work on Carmen Amaya and different articles from you. I personnally know one of Carmen's nephews. The Amayas are very respectable and very kind people. Thanks to people like you, Carmen's memory will remain unforgettable. She was a wonderful person; not only the artist but the human being. I look forward to read your new book! Kindest regards. ML
